Neurodiversity in the Classroom - A neuro-affirming approach.

Understanding Neurodiversity
Neurodiversity is the idea that differences in how people's brains work are a natural part of human diversity. Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, hyperlexia and Tourette syndrome aren't deficits to be corrected — they're different ways of processing the same shared world.
As London Autism Group Charity puts it, autism is a neurological difference, not an illness or imperfection: two operating systems can run very differently while still powering the same machine.
A neurodiverse classroom is one in which pupils think, communicate and learn in many different ways. Some children may excel at creative problem-solving, pattern recognition or memory for detail, while others may need additional support with organisation, communication, sensory processing or social interaction. Many autistic pupils are also autistic and ADHD, dyslexic or dyspraxic — co-occurring differences that shape how a child learns just as much as autism itself does.
Creating an inclusive classroom benefits not only neurodivergent pupils but every learner. Many strategies designed to support neurodivergent children also improve learning, wellbeing and engagement for the whole class.
Moving Beyond Labels
No two neurodivergent pupils are the same. Even children with the same diagnosis may have very different abilities, interests and support needs. Teachers should avoid assumptions and instead get to know each child as an individual — including how their support needs might shift from day to day, or even hour to hour, depending on environment and stress.
A genuinely strengths-based approach means focusing on what a pupil is good at and interested in — not only what needs fixing — and treating the pupil as an active partner in setting their own goals, rather than someone things are done to. This builds confidence and encourages meaningful participation in school life, and it's the same approach London Autism Group Charity uses in its own volunteering and workplace support work: starting from a person's genuine strengths and interests, not a generic template.
Recognising Masking
Many autistic pupils — especially girls and those who don't fit the stereotypical picture of autism — learn to mask: suppressing stimming, forcing eye contact, or rehearsing scripted small talk to blend in. Masking can make a struggling pupil look "fine" in the classroom, which means real difficulties go unnoticed and unsupported.
Masking is exhausting, not effortless.
A pupil who holds it together all day at school may reach home and completely fall apart — because it's the first place they feel safe enough to stop performing. Recognising this helps teachers avoid two common mistakes: assuming a masking pupil doesn't need support, and assuming a distressed pupil at pick-up reflects something wrong with home life rather than the cumulative cost of the school day.
Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment
Small adjustments can make a significant difference. Effective approaches include:
- Providing clear routines and predictable lesson structures.
- Giving instructions both verbally and in writing.
- Breaking tasks into manageable steps.
- Using visual supports where appropriate.
- Allowing additional processing time before expecting responses.
- Offering quiet spaces for pupils who become overwhelmed.
- Reducing unnecessary sensory distractions such as excessive noise or bright lighting where possible.
- Providing movement breaks for pupils who benefit from physical activity.
Flexibility is often more effective than expecting every pupil to learn in exactly the same way.
Communication Matters
Many neurodivergent pupils process language differently. Teachers can support understanding by:
- Using clear, literal language.
- Avoiding unnecessary ambiguity.
- Checking understanding without putting pupils on the spot.
- Providing written summaries of key information.
- Being patient if a pupil needs extra time to formulate an answer.
Some pupils may communicate best through writing, visual aids or assistive technology rather than speaking.
It's also worth remembering the Double Empathy Problem: research increasingly shows that communication breakdowns between autistic and non-autistic people go both ways, rather than sitting solely with the autistic pupil. A teacher misreading a pupil's tone, or a pupil misreading unstated classroom expectations, are two sides of the same mismatch — not a one-sided deficit to be corrected in the child alone.
Teachers may benefit from Autism training delivered by Autistic and Neurodivergent trainers. The Oliver McGowan Training, for example, is the Government-mandated Autism training delivered by Autistic people and people with Learning Disabilities. This training by people with lived experience is beneficial for all staff of the NHS, and can be just as useful for schools.
Understanding Sensory Differences
Many autistic pupils and some pupils with other neurodevelopmental differences experience heightened or reduced sensitivity to sensory input. Common sensory challenges include:
- Loud or unpredictable noises.
- Bright lights.
- Strong smells.
- Crowded environments.
- Certain textures or clothing.
Simple accommodations such as allowing noise-reducing headphones, flexible seating or access to a calm space can greatly reduce stress and improve concentration. Left unaddressed, repeated sensory overload can build toward autistic burnout — a state of deep exhaustion that goes well beyond ordinary tiredness and can take far longer than a weekend to recover from. A pupil who seems to suddenly lose skills or coping ability partway through a term may be showing signs of this build-up, and reducing demands is usually more effective than pushing through.
Sensory differences aren't only about avoiding too much input. Hypo-sensitive pupils may actually need more sensory stimulation in order to function and remain calm. Examples of this might include:
- Using tactile objects rather than work on paper to increase engagement in a task — coins for counting and learning about money, for instance.
- Weighted vests or deep pressure massage, which can provide proprioceptive stimulation: the body's ability to sense its own position, movement and force.
- A yoga ball, which can provide relief for a pupil who needs movement, such as someone with ADHD or hypermobility. This stimulates the vestibular sense, and a ten-minute break bouncing on a yoga ball can help a pupil sit and focus on a task for longer afterwards.
Supporting Executive Function
Executive functioning involves skills such as planning, organisation, working memory, time management and self-regulation. Many neurodivergent pupils find these skills particularly challenging.
Helpful strategies include:
- Visual timetables.
- Checklists.
- Colour-coded resources.
- Clearly defined deadlines.
- Regular reminders.
- Breaking larger projects into smaller milestones.
This provides the scaffolding to help support learning for pupils who need it. This support can put them on a pathway to achievement.
Concrete, hands-on materials can also make abstract concepts easier to grasp. Lego blocks, for example, can help illustrate ideas that dyscalculic pupils often struggle with on paper — fractions being a common one. A line of towers can be built increasing in height: one tower of two bricks, one of four, one of eight, with each tower representing the number 1. Taking one brick away from the tower of two then represents a half, and taking one brick away from the tower of four represents a quarter — turning an abstract fraction into something a pupil can see and physically handle.
Digital tools can work the same way. The computer game Minecraft, for example, can be used to engage pupils and introduce concepts of trigonometry — building structures at angles or calculating distances within the game gives dyscalculic pupils a genuinely motivating, hands-on way to encounter maths they might otherwise disengage from on paper.
Understanding Pathological Demand
Avoidance (PDA)
Some autistic pupils experience Pathological Demand Avoidance, a profile in which everyday demands — even ones the pupil wants to meet — trigger a level of anxiety that makes compliance feel genuinely impossible, not wilful. As PDA expert Tigger Pritchard explains, behaviour that looks insubordinate in a PDA profile is genuinely beyond the individual's control — it isn't wilfulness or rudeness. Recognising PDA changes how a "refusal" in class should be read and responded to — rigid demands tend to increase resistance, while collaborative, low-pressure approaches tend to reduce it.
Building Positive Relationships
Children learn best when they feel understood, respected and safe. Positive relationships develop when teachers:
- Listen to pupils' experiences.
- Value differences rather than trying to eliminate them.
- Recognise signs of stress, masking or sensory overload.
- Celebrate strengths and achievements.
- Work collaboratively with families and specialist professionals.
Trust creates an environment where pupils feel confident asking for help.
Managing Behaviour Through Understanding
Behaviour is communication. What appears to be defiance, disengagement or disruption may actually reflect anxiety, sensory overload, confusion, fatigue, masking fatigue or difficulty communicating needs.
Instead of asking, "What is wrong with this child?" it is often more helpful to ask, "What is this child trying to communicate?"
This is also one of the reasons why London Autism Group Charity does not endorse Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) or its relabelled form, Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), in an educational setting. Both approaches aim to suppress or eliminate visible behaviours — including stimming — rather than understand what they communicate, and the Autistic Community widely reports this as harmful rather than supportive. The Charity only endorses educational therapies that are non-invasive, non-stressful and mutually respectful, such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, drama therapy and physiotherapy — each aimed at supporting a pupil's own goals, not eliminating their natural coping strategies.
Universal Design for Learning
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) encourages educators to plan lessons that provide multiple ways for pupils to access information, demonstrate understanding and engage with learning. Examples include:
- Combining spoken, written and visual teaching.
- Offering different ways to complete assignments.
- Allowing pupils to demonstrate knowledge through presentations, artwork, written work or practical activities.
- Providing opportunities for independent and collaborative learning.
Designing flexibility into lessons from the beginning reduces the need for individual adaptations later.
Working in Partnership with Families
Parents and carers know their children better than anyone else. Open communication between home and school helps ensure consistent support and enables teachers to understand strategies that work well for individual pupils.
For pupils whose needs go beyond what ordinary classroom adjustments can provide, an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) sets out the additional educational, health and social support a child is legally entitled to. Parents and carers are best supported through this process by a local SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Information, Advice and Support Service) or a specialist charity adviser, and schools can help by working with families through this process rather than treating it as adversarial.
Listening to families can also provide valuable insight into communication preferences, sensory needs, interests and successful coping strategies that may never be visible during the school day, especially where a pupil masks at school and only decompresses at home.
The Benefits of Neurodiverse Classrooms
Inclusive classrooms foster empathy, creativity and collaboration. Pupils learn that differences are a normal and valuable part of society.
When neurodivergent pupils receive appropriate support, they are more likely to achieve academically, develop confidence and participate fully in school life. Their unique perspectives often enrich discussions, encourage innovative thinking and strengthen classroom communities.
When School Isn't the Right Fit
Where schools clearly cannot meet a pupil's needs, it is important to recognise the validity and value of home education. For some, this provides the only environment where the young person feels safe and confident enough to unmask and to be able to learn.
Conclusion
Neurodiversity reminds us that there is no single "right" way to think, learn or communicate. By recognising and valuing different learning styles — and by understanding the real cost of masking, sensory overload and unmet demands — teachers can create classrooms where every pupil has the opportunity to succeed.
Inclusive education is not about lowering expectations. It is about removing unnecessary barriers, embracing diversity and ensuring that all children can reach their full potential. A classroom that celebrates neurodiversity is one in which every learner feels respected, supported and empowered to thrive.
