In this world it is unfortunately necessary to constantly advocate for our right to have the things that often others take for granted. To be included in Society can mean that Autistic people and their family members have to fight to gain access to supportive education, access to and adjustments in employment.
Having a shared Autistic Identity is also vital in helping to support other Autistic people and advocating for them. There is a great advantage in having the lived experience of being Autistic, when supporting members of the Autistic community. Our Charity has found in its support work and funding support for mental health, that the best professionals to employ are Autistic and Neurodivergent.
Having that inbuilt knowledge and lived experience of Autism combined with professional skills is a game changing dynamic. It enables the advocate to empathise and understand exactly what the person is going through. They can better envisage the problem and formulate advanced solutions based on the unique perspectives that shared Neurodiversity allow.
