ADHD(Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a Neurological Difference that makes it hard to pay attention, sit still, and control actions. It often becomes apparent in childhood and is a lifelong difference.
There are several signs of ADHD in people.
Finding it hard to focus, losing things often, and getting easily distracted are all signs of Inattention.
Moving around too much, feeling restless, or having trouble sitting quiet are signs of Hyperactivity. This can also show if a person needs to move or pace up and down in order to think. At school children may fidget or rock in their chairs due to this.
Doing things fast without thinking first, and speaking out of turn are signs of Impulsivity, which is also part of ADHD.
There are certain Types of ADHD.
The Inattentive type mostly has trouble with focus and memory.
A Hyperactive-impulsive type, mostly has high energy and acts fast.
A combined type shows both focus issues and high energy.
ADHD procrastination and paralysis are distinct responses which effect executive functioning, where the brain freezes and prevents the person from doing a task.
This is not a conscious choice, but a mental barrier. It is important not to label a person as lazy or intentionally avoidant. Labels can have a negative effect on self esteem and mental health.
Procrastination in neuro-typical people means actively choosing to delay a task, whereas ADHD paralysis is an involuntary lockdown caused by overwhelm, information overload, over or under stimulation, or fear of failure.
There may be problems doing a big project over a long period of time, without a lot of support in structuring and splitting up into smaller parts.
Homework at school or timed work projects in adult life can be problematic for adhd. This is because the adhd brain chemistry is different to neurotypical brains.
There is therefore a much higher need for chemicals such as dopamine and adrenaline to trigger a sudden burst of work activity. This comes usually from the fear of an impending deadline, which triggers the brain chemistry.
Many people who have an adhd brain will commonly leave big tasks such as school work until the last possible moment before a deadline.
This can mean they stay up all night working before a deadline, without any sleep, to get the task done.
When in a state of hyperfocus, the person can acomplish a large task in one sitting. Often this is at the cost of burnout and the person requires a recovery period afterwards.
ADHD hyperfocus and flow state are intense zones of deep concentration, driven by dopamine spikes, but differ because hyperfocus can be dysregulated and hard to stop, while flow is balanced and controllable.
There are some key differences that can be identified and effect the outcome of being in a flow state.
Control: Flow stops easily when needed; hyperfocus can trap the brain until exhaustion or sleep.
Utility: Flow matches task difficulty to skill; hyperfocus may lock onto random or low-priority details.
In a school or workplace, hyper focus that locks onto details without control can be highly problematic, as it means productive time has been wasted.
For example, an student with adhd can be under timed conditions in an exam. They may write reams of paper on one question at the start, and then realise there is not enough time to finish the other questions. So they may score poorly overall because they were in a hyper-focused state and were unaware of the time.
Issues with Awareness mean that a person in a hyper-focused state can lose track of time, while hyperfocus can entirely ignore basic needs like eating or appointments.
This can be highly problematic for an individual's health and in their academic and working life.
There are several ways to trigger healthy Flow states with ADHD.
Adding novelty can help. Creating a variety in routine can have a positive outcome.
Using a specific background sound to inspire a certain emotion or mood can also improve the situation.
Setting mini-goals, by using checklists for instance can create instant feedback loops.
Another method can be to clear space and make time. Reducing physical clutter and silencing phones, does a lot to limit external interruptions.
It should be noted that interrupting a person's state of flow can be highly upsetting and can trigger meltdown or shutdown, and burnout, with productivity being lost. It can also effect mental health.
In adhd it is possible for certain medication to alleviate these executive functioning issues.
But these of course require an adhd diagnosis, which means a long waiting time (in the UK) and may also have undesirable side effects that impact the way people think. So they must be introduced carefully and adjusted to the person's needs and requirements.
ADHD through the neurodiversity paradigm highlights unique cognitive styles that offer distinct advantages when paired with the right environment.
People with ADHD brains can have unique cognitive flexibility and high levels of innovation.
They demonstrate Divergent thinking which naturally generates a high volume of unique, out-of-the-box ideas.
Rapid problem-solving can also be a trait, with the ability to link seemingly unrelated concepts to fuel creative breakthroughs.
When in hyperfocus and deeply interested, individuals achieve intense, highly productive absorption in a task.
Adhd can also show resiliency and adaptive traits, such as a high energy dynamic enthusiasm, which often translates into strong leadership, charisma, and motivational drive.
Adhd famously provides a high level of Crisis competence. Low baseline arousal can make the ADHD brain remarkably calm and effective in high-stress chaos.
An innate curiosity in ADHDers can lead to a constant search for novel stimuli, which fosters continuous learning and a willingness to take calculated risks.
Ultimately, ADHD is a different way of processing the world. When society shifts from trying to cure these differences to accommodating and leveraging them, the ADHD cognitive style becomes a powerful asset for innovation and cultural growth.
